Testimonial

It is rare that one finds a group with as much passion and creativity as Balance Studios. With Tina and Darren at the helm, the animation house has proved itself to be more than capable of meeting--and exceeding--all my expectations. I was fortunate enough to work with Tina and Darren on a recent project and was continually amazed by their ability to translate my vision into a reality. At every point in the creative process, they supported my ideas, offered their own, and imbued their work with a distinctive look and feel. They are funny, friendly, and truly committed to excellence in every respect.

During my very first meeting with Balance Studios, Tina and Darren shared the story of their foray into the world of animation, saying that they decided to become animators because they wanted to spend their lives doing something they truly loved. That passion is evident in all that they do. I could not be more happy with my experience collaborating with Balance Studios, and I can assure you that you will feel the same way.

Children's TV Series: Pitch Piece

Synopsis

"Created in a pop-up book world, this Snippets style animation (technique created by Balance Studios), combines 2D and 3D animation in an animated children's program. Go inside these living pages and you'll be magically transported into a 2-dimensional world of cardboard and paper creatures. On page one, you'll encounter the diabolical arachnids dwelling in the molten rock, black trees and tall mountains of SpyDar.

On the flip side of the paper mountains, just to the left of the Darkwoods, lies the enchanting village of Glasuig on page two, inhabited by cardboardial Gnomes, Leprechauns, Fairies, Trolls, and the “all-knowing” Trees of Council.

The Clans of SpyDar and Glasuig are as polar as chocolate and steak, and After 100 years of constant chiding, shenanigans and trickery the ongoing tug of war is escalated when a magical four-leaf clover, the 3D-UEO "Unidentified Emerald Object", mysteriously grows smack dab in the middle of page two.

This short animated pitch piece is used to demonstrated the look, feel, and style of the characters and their environments to potential investors and broadcast outlets."

Museum Exhibit: Lyle Gun Edu-stitial

Synopsis

The Door County Maritime Museum wanted to create an exhibit based on the original Coast Guards, formerly called the US Life Saving Service. Their main job was to watch over the Great Lakes searching for signs of distress ships. Once a ship was located, the Service used a contraption called, the Lyle Gun cannon, to help remove stranded sailors from the vessels.

The challenge of this exhibit was to make the exhibit educational, interactive, and exciting for young and older patrons.

Balance suggested creating an interactive gaming experience that could test the 'life-saving' skill through an ""edu-tainment"" experience. This interactive touch-screen game, included three skill levels that challenged the player on shooting the Lyle Gun cannon to latch on to stranded vessels. The skill levels were determined by weather conditions and distance to the ship with special educational information provided upon completing each level. Additionally, a series of Edu-stitials (or educational interstitials), were created to provide in depth information about the Lyle Gun components.

The Door County Maritime Museum wanted to create an exhibit based on the original Coast Guards, formerly called the US Life Saving Service. Once a ship was located, the Service used a contraption called, the Lyle Gun cannon, to help remove stranded sailors from the vessels.

Synopsis

The Seymour Historical Society was launching into the it's fundraising phase for the design and development of the new Seymour Museum building and internal exhibits.

Balance was commissioned for the ideation and development an engaging and unique fundraising video to convey the necessity and importance of this new endeavor. Their idea of re-creating Horatio Seymour himself to aid the fundraising was instantly approved.

The final video combined the 3D Horatio Seymour AVATAR's facial/articulation animation with graphics, still photography, a professional voice over and emotional driving music bed. Balance hired talent from Disney and utilized their proprietary facial capture software, combined with traditional hand animation (and had a lot of fun with the hair) to create a dynamic AVATAR. The video has been a great success as they are breaking ground on the new building.

Museum Exhibit

Synopsis

The Door County Maritime Museum came to Balance with the challenge of creating a exhibit based on the haunted lighthouses of the Great Lakes. Balance worked with the Museum on all facets of the exhibit, including creating apparitions, practical fx, special fx, illusions, exhibit layout, and the audio soundtrack for the full exhibit to create a educational, paranormal experience for visiting patrons.

The story of the Tawas Ghost is a light-house keeper's wife heard and saw a little girl crying on the lighthouse steps. As she approached, the girl got up, ran to the light-house door, and disappeared.

Through a combination of 3D animation to create the old lighthouse, environment, and CG clouds, with the Green Screen live action actress Balance recreated the actual paranormal experience.

Proof of Concept-Muzzle Replacement

Synopsis

The Star Dogs is a television series based on popular Evergreen stories. The first episode going into production was based on Heidi. The unique twist-all of the characters are canines!

As a proof of concept, and in partnership with Wine Studios of Sendai, Japan, Balance was given live action, green screen test plates of the four main canine characters and tasked with making them talk.

The Challenge?

Balance only received the green screen footage from a front view without tracking markers; therefore having to interpret the movements and full muzzle in order to create a matching 3D model for the muzzle replacement. In the end, the full muzzle, whiskers, fur, teeth, tongue, and the inside of the mouth were modeled, textured, and lit to seamlessly match the canine. From there, the full 3D animation and articulation of the dogs talking brought the characters to life.

The Result

Beautifully rendered live action dogs that, talk with true believable emotion.
